Makeup Monday! Natural Makeup Review: Tarte “Box of Shadows”

I recently purchased a few items from Tarte that I’ll be reviewing for you over the next few weeks. This one is Tarte’s Beauty & the Box in “Brewed Awakening.” Haha, Tarte, very cute. I like it. I also like the gorgeous package. That’s a huge plus for me. As a woman and a design school graduate, I require sexy packaging. I wish more natural cosmetic companies could get it together in this department.

Swatched below from light to dark: Foam, Raw Sugar (my favorite), Espresso, & Roast.

I have been hearing all about Tarte since I became interested in non-toxic makeup and I have no idea why I waited so long to try them. Perhaps it’s because I know they use a couple of chemicals I’m not crazy about. Like phenoxyethanol, for example (it’s in this product.) To Tarte’s credit however, this item rates a respectably low 3 on Skin Deep, and it could be lower than that depending on the percentages used.

The verdict: The shadows themselves are lush, silky and well-pigmented. They combine nicely and look great on both warm and cool skin tones. Overall, this is a solid and versatile palette that allows for crisp, clean looks as well as smokier looks. Would I buy it again? Maybe, but that all depends on what else I find out in hippie-makeup-land. My budget hasn’t allowed for a lot of makeup purchases this month, but I’ve got my eye on other natural eyeshadows that I’d like to try first. I purchased this item at Ulta for $22; not a terrible price for a prestige line. In fact, I’m finding many of Tarte’s items to be a little less expensive than other high-end natural brands, hence my budget woes.

Have you tried any of Tarte’s shadows? What did you think?

I hope to have a new lens for my camera in a few weeks, so you’ll be seeing more makeup looks in the future. Until then, arm swatches it is!
